What To Bring (and What Not To Bring)
Bed:
1) Provided: Mattress, Frame (lofted or un-lofted, can be switched)
2) Bring: Sheets (Twin XL), Comforter, Pillow
3) Optional: Mattress Pad, any other bedding, ear plugs, sleep masks.
Desk:
1) Provided: Desk, Three Drawers, Slide Out Keyboard Tray, Utilitarian Desk Chair
2) Bring: Desk Lamp (dimmer is better), Computer, White Board, Stapler, Staples, Writing Utensils
3) Optional: Comfy Desk Chair, Three Hole Punch, Decorations, Printer*, Anything You Can Buy At Office Max
Shower:
1) Provided: Shower Stall with Curtain, Shower, Sink, Mirrors, Several Toilets
2) Bring: Toothbrush, Toothpaste, Floss, Deodorant (PLEASE), Towels, Shampoo/conditioner, Soap, Body wash, Shower Caddy, Shaving Utensils, Sunscreen, Nail Clippers,
3) Optional: Shower Flip Flops
Clothes**:
1) Provided: One Orientation Week T-shirt.
2) Bring: T-shirts, Tank Tops, Shorts, Athletic Gear, Comfortable shoes you can move in, Sandals, Underwear, Sunglasses,
3) Bring or Ship Later: Winter Clothes. Seriously. You won’t need them for at least a few weeks...
Room at Large:
1) Provided: One Dresser with 5 Drawers, One Closet, Various Outlets, Trash and Recycling Bins,
2) Bring: Summer Clothes**, Fan/Air Conditioner**, Hamper, Detergent, Hangers, Extension Cords, Towels, Reusable Dishes, Dish Soap, Decorations***, Speakers, Water Bottles, Umbrella, Charging Cables, Mild Pain relief medicine (Advil, Tylenol, Ibuprofen), Cough drops, Nyquil/Dayquil, Bandaids
3) Optional: TVs, Game Consoles (Super Smash is a MUST), Gamecube controllers, Non-perishable foods****, Coffee Maker, Water Filter, Passport, Bug Spray, Musical Instruments, Sports Equipment, Duct tape, Oil for squeaky hinges, Batteries, Iron/Ironing board,
School:
1) Provided: Classes, An Expensive Bookstore that sells CMU Swag and CMU School Supplies, Nearby stores to buy less expensive school supplies
2) Bring: Pencils. Pens. PENCILS. Paper, Notebooks, Computer, Calculator,
3) Optional: Index Cards, Highlighters, Whatever you feel you need
(side note: try to contact upperclassmen to discover and purchase the class-required books, or try to get them from amazon- the book store is ridiculously pricey)
*Donner has a printer on the first floor, and CMU provides $40 of printing per student per semester. Personal printers can be expensive to maintain, but if you feel the need, bring it.
** For those of you not from the Pittsburgh Area, The first month of the first semester will be hot and humid. Orientation week especially involves a lot of running around outside. Bring clothes that you feel comfortable getting sweaty in.
*** Please remember that unless you have a single (unlikely), you’re sharing your your room with another person. That being said, this is still partially your space for a whole year. Make it your own! Posters and hangings are recommended, anything that can be hung with command strips - avoid thumbtacks. The best rooms are always the most personalized.
**** There is an on campus convenience store that sells basic goods and accepts the meal plan. There are also several supermarkets within walking distance/ bus ride range. You can bring an under 700 watt microwave and a mini fridge, or you can rent a combo fridge microwave from the school.
